SUMMARY:The Manchester Metallurgical Society Seminar entitled ‘Internal I
ntergranular Stress Corrosion Cracking of Shale Gas Flow lines’
UID:{http://www.columbasystems.com/customers/uom/gpp/eventid/}gnh-k0xw9xv

DESCRIPTION:\nThe cause of leaks in Shale Gas flowlines was investigated.
Cracks were found at girth welds joining API 5L X52 pipe. Cracks initia
ted on the inside surface at the lower quadrant. \nThey were intergranul
ar and multi-branched having features similar to amine stress corrosion
cracks in refineries and external carbonate cracking in gas transmission
lines. Low flow \nrates permitted spent hydrogen sulphide scavenger com
prising of monoethylamine (MEA) to accumulate at low points in the flowl
ine. Reaction between high pH MEA and carbon dioxide \nfrom the process
gas formed a carbonate/bicarbonate solution which together with high res
idual stresses from welding caused intergranular stress corrosion cracki
ng (IGSCC) of the carbon steel.\n\nE. HEAVER obtained a B.Sc. (Hons) deg
ree in metallurgy from Aston University followed by four years conductin
g metallurgical failure analysis of mining equipment for RCM/ NCCM Minin
 g \nIndustry Technical Services\, Zambia. Joining SASOL\, he obtained a
Ph.D. from a study of CO-CO2-H2O stress corrosion cracking in tail and r
eformed gas circuits. After working for 15 years \nin the down¬stream pe
trochemical industry\, he moved to BHP Petroleum\, where he worked on up
stream oil and gas materials performance for more than 20 years. He rece
ntly founded \nReal Life Metallurgy\, materials engineering consultancy\
, based in Manchester. \n\n\nFree buffet from 18:00 in the foyer of the
