Title :
Where Rivers Eat. Materializing Riparian Hope and Fear in Central Asia.
Abstract :
The Syr Darya, known in its eastern reaches as the Naryn, is the longest river in Central Asia and an important feeder of the shrinking Aral Sea. While transboundary water disputes shape regional politics, residents along the highland Naryn barely notice this spectacular current and focus affective attention on a riparian otherwise. This paper unpacks the water ideologies, political ecologies and post-Soviet temporalities leading to such disjunctures.
What are the broader consequences of relating to environments as a ‘present absence’?
