 n 1980 for his novel The World According to Garp \, received an O. Henry
  Award in 1981 for his short story Interior Space and in 2000 won the Os
 car for Best Adapted Screenplay for The Cider House Rules.\n  \nReviewin
 g John Irving’s twelfth novel In One Person\, which won a Lambda Award i
 n 2013\, Jeanette Winterson noted that: “Reading Irving\, it seems to me
  that what he is saying about desire outside of the missionary position 
 – (a psychic attitude\, not a physical preference) – is never an apology
 \, nor an explanation.\nIrving’s new novel\, his fourteenth\, Avenue of 
 Mysteries\, was described in the New York Times as “thoroughly modern\, 
 accessibly brainy\, hilariously eccentric and beautifully human.” \nHe w
 ill read from and discuss his new novel with Jeanette Winterson\, Profes
 sor of Creative Writing at the University of Manchester’s Centre for New
