DESCRIPTION:3-4.30pm. Hannah O’Regan\, Archaeology\, Liverpool John Moore
s University.\nCave archaeology has\, at times\, been central to our und
erstanding of human evolution. Especially during the late 19th century\,
when ‘Cave hunting’ was not just a book (Boyd Dawkins\, 1874)\, but als
o a key pastime for keen antiquarians. Discoveries and excavations all o
ver the UK meant that large quantities of archaeological remains\, inclu
ding human burials\, non-human bones such as bear and lynx\, stone tools
and pottery were recovered. Some of these specimens made their way into
museum collections and this talk will discuss\, using examples from Nor
th West England and The Manchester Museum collections\, what can be lear
ned from the archives\, the specimens\, and from the application of new
 scientific techniques.
