Transcending The Ethical Dilemmas Of Humanitarianism:
American Christian Missionaries At A Hospital In Rural Zambia
After arriving to volunteer at a rural hospital in Zambia, many American missionaries began to have doubts about the purpose of their work. One of the most troubling concerns for these medical missionaries was whether the Christian character of their actions was being properly “recognised” by the Zambian patients and health professionals they encountered. This paper considers why this problem emerged for these missionaries – in a setting in which local churches were thriving and most people identified as Christians – and shows how, in response, many missionaries “transcended” this dilemma by suggesting that the real purpose of their visit to Zambia was to exemplify Christian compassion for people who could properly recognise it: namely, their families, friends and church members at home in the United States. The paper argues that a focus on the importance of such domestic relationships has implications for how we understand the politics of humanitarianism more broadly.
