SUMMARY:Lovell Lecture: Exploring the Cool Universe from the Andes with t
 he ALMA Telescope

DESCRIPTION:The Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-mm Array (ALMA) telescope is
a revolutionary array telescope located 5000m above sea-level in the At
acama Desert of Chile.\n\nComprising 66 individual dishes spread out ove
r 14 kilometres\, ALMA observes the Universe at millimetre and submillim
etre wavelengths. This allows astronomers to study molecular gas and dus
t in objects from within our own Solar System all the way out to some of
the earliest galaxies ever formed\, at incredibly high resolution.\n\nI
n this talk Dr. Adam Avison will show some of the amazing science ALMA h
as done in its first few years of operation\; from dust lanes carved out
of disks by forming planets to a near perfect Einstein ring from a grav
itationally lensed distant galaxy. He will also show off the technical w
onder that is the ALMA telescope itself.\n\nAdam is a research astronome
r from the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics at the University of Man
chester\, where he is a member of the UK ALMA Regional Centre Node. He w
orks there as a support scientist for the Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-m
m Array (ALMA) telescope in Chile\, a world leading telescope observing
at millimetre wavelengths\, ensuring astronomers around the UK get the b
est out of their data from ALMA.\n\nPre-Lecture dining available in the
 Planet Pavilion Cafe (booking required)
