DESCRIPTION:(via Zoom)\nJoin us for this seminar by Chay Paterson (Manche
ster) as part of the North West Seminar Series in Mathematical Biology a
nd Data Sciences. Details of the full series can be found here https://w
ww.cms.livjm.ac.uk/APMSeminar/\n\nThe talk will be hosted in Simon Build
ing room 4.05 and via zoom\, please contact carl.whitfield@manchester.ac
.uk or igor.chernyavsky@manchester.ac.uk for the zoom link\, or sign up
to the mailing list.\n\nAbstract: Multi-stage mathematical models have c
ontributed a great deal to our understanding of cancer\, from Armitage a
nd Doll's original work in the 1950s\, to Knudson's studies of retinobla
stoma in the 1970s. We extend these models from linear paths to networks
with multiple mutational pathways: somatic evolution is understood as a
stochastic process on a directed graph\, with edges representing specif
ic mechanisms. This approach links population incidence\, genomic data\,
and molecular mechanisms. \n\nWhile originally developed for colorectal
adenocarcinoma\, when applied to vestibular schwannoma\, our approach e
nables new estimates of mutation rates in Schwann precursor cells. We al
so try to constrain what events may trigger the extremely rare process o
f malignant transformation of vestibular schwannoma. I make the case tha
t this class of tumours represents an exciting opportunity to study tumo
ur initiation and malignant transformation "in slow motion" and high res
olution\, with evolutionary models on networks providing us with powerfu
l analytic tools.\n\nTo subscribe to the mailing list for this event ser
ies\, please send an e-mail with the phrase “subscribe math-lifesci-semi
