DESCRIPTION:Join us for this PSI seminar with guest speaker Prof. Robert
Simpson. The objective of this seminar is to highlight that new material
s need to be developed specifically for programmable metamaterials. The
inherent property portfolios of the common telluride phase change materi
als\, which have been successfully applied in data storage technologies\
, are unsuitable for most emerging programmable photonics applications.
We believe that newer PCMs with wider bandgaps\, such as Sb2S3\, Sb2Se3\
, and Ge2Sb2Se4Te (GSST)\, can be optimized to meet the demands of holog
raphic displays\, optical neural network memories\, and beam steering de
vices. \nProf. Simpson will start the seminar by discussing the history
of phase change materials and their application to photonics. He will th
en discuss the suitability of the materials we have used to enable visib
 le\, near-infrared\, and mid-infrared programmable metamaterials. Finall
y\, Prof. Simpson will discuss his plans for his new position at the Uni
 versity of Birmingham. \n\n\n
