How can development research – and universities more generally – overcome the traditional division between North and South research, and between academic and non-academic researchers? The inequities and dysfunctionalities of such divisions are well documented, and the case for more equitable research has been well made. But how can fairer and more equitable research practices be implemented and maintained?
This panel engages with what is possible in respect of new modalities. The panel reports on progress on the Africa Charter, and on the efforts of the African Cities Research Consortium to decentralize decision making and to co-develop research approaches. We examine experiences of the Community Savers network in Manchester to work collaboratively with academics; and work to date within the African Cities Research Consortium on enhancing the role of community researchers.
We recognise that this is work in progress. Addressing inequalities and inequities in resource flows, decision making and knowledge contributions requires fundamental changes in the academy and capability development for all parties. This panel shares some ideas of what is being tried, what is being achieve, and what remains to be done.
