Matthew Wallace Reader in Social Inequality, University of Salford

Title: International migration, mortality, and national life expectancy

International migrants represent increasing and diverse proportions of the populations of major migrant-receiving countries that have a growing potential to influence estimates of national mortality. While many studies have reported mortality differences between migrants and non-migrants, very few studies have sought to quantify the actual impact of these differences upon national life expectancy, one of the world's most widely used metrics of population health that informs a vast array of social and public health policies. Here, we aim to quantify and unpack the impact of international migrants on national life expectancy in the Nordic region, particularly Sweden, over a long period of time (1990—2022) using total population register data. We use demographic methods that include calculations, and decompositions thereof, of national life expectancy. We place strong emphasis on varying contributions across countries, and by age, migrant generation, and migrant background. We document, a small, but growing impact of international migrants upon national life expectancy, alongside heterogeneity in the size and direction of these contributions according to (a) sex, (b) age, © generation, and (d) specific migrant origins.
