DESCRIPTION:Abstract: There are two bundles of claims about forgiveness t
hat often appear together in the philosophical literature. The Supererog
ation Bundle includes the claims that forgiveness is never obligatory\,
that forgiveness should never be demanded by a wrongdoer\, that forgiven
ess is an admirable and generous gift\, and that the wrongdoer owes the
forgiver a debt of gratitude. The Reacceptance Bundle includes the claim
s that forgiving is the repairing of a rend in a relationship\, that for
giving is a welcoming back of the wrongdoer into the moral community\, a
nd that the victim's forgiveness allows her to be for rather than agains
t the wrongdoer. In this paper I aim to explain why these bundles of cla
ims tend to go together\, and to show how they distort our understanding
of forgiveness. By rejecting both bundles we can avoid some common path
 ologies of forgiveness.
