DESCRIPTION:You are warmly invited to the final Sociology seminar of this
academic year which will be given by Dr Jacopo Galimberti\, Sociology\,
  SoSS.\n\nThe seminar will take place on Wednesday\, 23rd May\, 2-3pm\,
in G.019 Arthur Lewis Building.\n\nJacopo's talk is entitled: 'From the
City to the Poster. The Visual World of Two Social Movements'\n \nAbstra
ct\nFrom Empire to Federici’s Caliban and the Witch and Mezzadra’s and N
eilson’s Border as Method\, the past fifteen years have seen a surge of
interest in books the theoretical frameworks of which are rooted in oper
aismo (also known as “workerism”) and autonomia. My paper will present m
y research on these two social movements that emerged in 1960’s and 1970
’s Italy but became a transnational phenomenon. Despite the expanding li
terature on the subject\, little has been written about the visual mater
ial\, from urban plans to graphic design\, that was produced by the arti
sts who participated in these movements\, and tried to translate their p
olitical tenets into artefacts. Apart from providing insights into the w
ork of these activists/artists\, my research aspires to raise more gener
al questions. Does the study of images improve our knowledge of social m
 ovements? \n\nAll welcome.
