DESCRIPTION:This talk will provide an overview of some of the “economic” 
 ideas that\nemerged during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States peri
 ods\n(c. 770-226 BC) from different “schools” of thought including the\n
 Confucians\, Legalists and Daoists. The ancient (pre-Qin) Chinese did\nn
 ot compose works on pure economic theory in its modern sense.\nBut\, as 
 with the ancient Greeks\, they did address questions that we\nwould reco
 gnise as “economic” in nature\, including the organisation of\nproductio
 n and the role of the state\, the scope and desirability of profitseekin
 g\nactivities\, scarcity\, consumption\, trade\, taxation\, population\,
 \nand welfare.\n\nTerry Peach co-edited (with Cheng Lin and Wang Fang) T
 he History of\nAncient Chinese Economic Thought (Routledge\, 2014). He i
 s currently\ninvolved in a research project with Chinese colleagues on t
 he political\neconomy of the Han dynasty and its legacy.
