DESCRIPTION:This course provides an introduction to the theory and method
 s of quantitative data analysis\, focusing on the social survey. It has 
 an emphasis on hands-on learning\, with a series of practical sessions u
 sing the statistical software package SPSS to explore data from the Brit
 ish Social Attitudes survey.\n\nThe course will:\n\n    introduce partic
 ipants to survey data as a key quantitative resource for social science 
 research\;\n    introduce the structure and properties of survey data an
 d consider the process by which variables in a dataset are derived\;\n  
   explain the distinction between interval and discrete variables\;\n   
  consider strategies for exploratory data analysis including methods for
  describing and summarising variable distributions\;\n    provide partic
 ipants with a conceptual understanding of the stages involved in explori
 ng the relationship between variables\;\n    provide essential skills of
  data manipulation including selecting sub-sets and recoding\;\n    intr
 oduce the visual representation of variables in scatter graphs\, bar cha
 rts and histograms.\n
