n\n\nOn December 14th 1945\, Bernard Lovell first switched on his radar

odrell Bank\, the way that the science of Radio Astronomy first began an

leading to the creation of the great Lovell Telescope and beyond.\n\nThe
morning after the lecture will see the launch of the UK’s first Europea
n Space Agency astronaut\, Tim Peake\, on a 6-month mission to the Inter
national Space Station. It’s fitting that this evening’s lecture will al
so look at Jodrell Bank’s role in the very first steps in the space race
\, which ultimately led to the Apollo missions and the International Spa
ce Station itself.\n\nThis event launches a year-long celebration of the
past\, present and future of Jodrell Bank’s science\, engineering and h
eritage.\n\nPre-lecture dining is available in the Jodrell Bank Café.\n\
