Nick Read has recently relocated from Edinburgh to Manchester to head up the Fungal Infection group. His work covers several important fungal pathogens. Most filamentous fungi form complex, interconnected, supracellular networks of fungal hyphae. These networks are generated by the fusion of genetically identical hyphae or cell protrusions that form from spores or hyphae. I will discuss the mechanics of cell fusion, the novel signaling processes involved and the extraordinarily dynamic movement of nuclei through the fungal colony network.
