Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) is a key value of higher education institutions. The University of Manchester, like many other universities must take active steps to provide an inclusive environment for students, staff and visitors irrespective of their age, race, religion or belief (non-belief), sex and sexual orientation, disability and other characteristics. Data analysis plays a vital role in understanding existing patterns and making recommendations to improve EDI. In this talk, Sami Karamalla-Gaiballa will discuss his role as Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Data Analyst at the University of Manchester, and demonstrate how he uses data in his everyday role. Using Higher Education Statistics Agency data, attendees will engage hands on with key problems in this space, e.g.: how are relevant concepts defined and measured, data cleaning and preparation using R and making use of the Radient R Shiny platform for generating insights into the data. The session will have a practical hands-on component, but there is no expectation of familiarity with any analytical tools. The talk will end with a Q&A session, where attendees can engage with the content discussed.

The talk is suitable for all levels of competency in R, those who are interested in policy development and similar areas.

Sami Karamalla-Gaiballa is EDI Data Analyst at the University of Manchester.

Sami’s main role is to interpret patterns in data to identify key areas were bias might be occurring as well as to build models which help in indicating solutions to and evaluate impact of current programmes across a number of areas.
