Building the city: time, materiality and uncertainty in Nairobi
Dr Constance Smith, Social Anthropology, University of Manchester
With the launch of spectacular urban megaprojects across the continent, cities in Africa are on the cusp of radical urban change. In Kenya, the ‘Vision 2030’ masterplan promises to reinvent Nairobi as a ‘world-class African metropolis’, generating a climate of uncertainty and anxiety for the city’s ordinary citizens. This seminar examines how residents of a colonial-era housing estate are responding to this future uncertainty in a surprising way: through a reappraisal of the city’s architectural past.
Their engagements with the colonial architecture of their homes have animated new political sensibilities, where practices of history-making and home-making converge to challenge both the accepted history of Nairobi and official visions for the city’s future.
