 ds@Manchester)\n\nDoing [reporting on prisons] is like looking through a
  keyhole: it is very difficult \nto get reliable information about what 
 is going on inside a corrections facility \n(Schwirtz\, 2015) Marion wil
 l be discussing her research methods exploring how \nlife imprisonment w
 ith no possibility of parole\, the alternative to the death penalty\, \n
 had become normalized\, using California as a case study.  She received 
 over \n300 letters written from men and women serving life with no parol
 e across the state. \n\nThe adventures\, thrills\, demands and frustrati
 ons of her research will be outlined.  \nShe will highlight how research
  rarely goes to plan and how researchers are required \nto adapt their a
 pproach by adopting an array of research tools\; being creative when \nu
 sing them\; and more generally\, remaining flexible and adjustable becau
 se the original \nmethodological frame is likely to change due to unexpe
 cted events and realities. \n\nDuring this interactive workshop she will
  discuss the pros and cons of doing research using \nprisoners’ letters\
 , and will touch upon the emotions this form of data may provoke.
