Environments of ageing have long been a focus of social gerontologists. We can see this emphasis reflected in the Social, Behavioural and Design Research Programme (SBDRP) of the Healthy Ageing Challenge, a 4-year (2020–2024) programme of research and innovation in the UK. Collectively, projects under the SBDRP bring a contemporary and evolving narrative to environments of ageing, highlighting the ways in which people interact with diverse levels at the micro (home and household), meso (community and retail), and macro (public spaces and natural and built environments) levels.
This presentation will chart the evolution of environmental gerontology by drawing on the various programmes of ageing research in the UK since the 1980s to illustrate the changing landscape. What have we learnt from the past? Where are we now? These are questions that will be addressed empirically and theoretically through consideration of the topic’s current location. New directions for the future of urban ageing research will be proposed, drawing on the SBDRP, including the unique challenges and opportunities presented by left behind environments of ageing. Furthermore, the impact of climate change at the macro level will be discussed, considering how shifts in the natural and built environments influence the ageing experience.
This event will be hosted in room G30/31, Arthur Lewis Building, the University of Manchester (M13 9PL).
Lunch, tea, and coffee will be provided, and these events are open to everyone interested in ageing, both academics and members of the public.
