We are delighted to launch the latest book from Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) Centre de Réflexion sur l'Action et les Savoirs Humanitaires (CRASH), "Saving Lives and Staying Alive. Humanitarian Security in the Age of Risk Management" (HURST Publishers, February 2016).
This event will include a debate and critical engagement with the book, with the Editors and colleagues from the Humanitarian and Conflict Response Institute (HCRI).

Mac Ginty, Roger (Event Chair)
Role: Professor of Peace and Conflict Studies
Organisation: The Humanitarian and Conflict Response Institute (HCRI)
Biography: Roger Mac Ginty is Professor of Peace and Conflict Studies at the Humanitarian and Conflict Response Institute and the Department of Politics. He is editor (with Oliver Richmond) of the new Taylor and Francis journal Peacebuilding and is currently editing the Handbook on Peacebuilding for Routledge. He is the Director of Research at HCRI.
Neuman, Michaël
Role: Director of Studies
Organisation: MSF–Crash
Biography: Michaël Neuman is director of studies at MSF–Crash. He joined MSF in 1999, alternating between missions in the field and positions at MSF headquarters. From 2008- 2010, Neuman served on the board of directors of the French and US sections of MSF. He is co-editor of Humanitarian Negotiations Revealed: The MSF Experience (2012).
Read, Róisín
Role: HCRI Research Associate
Organisation: The Humanitarian and Conflict Response Institute (HCRI)
Biography: Dr Róisín Read completed her ESRC-funded PhD in the Institute for Development Policy and Management at The University of Manchester in 2013. Róisín is particularly interested in questioning practices of knowledge production in post-conflict environments and the political effects of epistemological hierarchies in these contexts. She joined the HCRI as part of the Making Peacekeeping Data Work Project which will consider the use and production of UN peacekeeping data in Darfur, continuing her research focus on Sudan and South Sudan and the politics of knowledge production. She is also researching the interactions between northern and southern NGOs in emergency response.
Taithe, Bertrand
Role: HCRI Executive Director
Organisation: The Humanitarian and Conflict Response Institute (HCRI)
Biography: Professor Bertrand Taithe studied at the Sorbonne with Professor François Crouzet and began his career as a historian of urban sociology. He later moved into the history of medicine and sexuality and is particularly interested in the history of humanitarian aid. Professor Taithe is a prolific author, Editor of the European Review of History, and Executive Director of HCRI.
Weissman, Fabrice
Role: Coordinator and a Director of Studies
Organisation: MSF–Crash
Biography: Fabrice Weissman is Coordinator and a Director of Studies at MSF–Crash. A specialist in Sub-saharan Africa, he has been working with MSF since 1995, and spent many years in the field. He is the editor of In the Shadow of ‘Just Wars’: Violence, Politics and Humanitarian Action (2004), and co-editor of Humanitarian negotiations Revealed: The MSF Experience (2012).
