About the event:
On May 1st 2013 the GDC changed the scope of practice for Dental Hygienists and Dental Therapists in the UK. The requirement for a patient to first have a referral from a Dentist before receiving treatment from a Dental Care Professional has been removed. This method of practice is called Direct Access. A similar policy was introduced in the Netherlands in 2006. This paper draws on a qualitative study of this policy in the Netherlands carried out by the author. This research was conducted in collaboration with academics from the University of Manchester, University of Groningen and the HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht. 33 participants covering different professional stakeholder groups in Dutch dentistry were interviewed. This paper will present the results of this study, showing the outcomes such a policy has had before discussing the relevance of these findings to the UK.
All welcome. No booking necessary
