Join us at the School of Arts, Languages and Cultures for the launch of 'Beyond the Chair', a new book by Manchester Metropolitan University Postgraduate Researcher Paul Doyle

Paul has Cerebral Palsy, which has a significant impact on his motor functions and speech. Despite the barriers he faced Paul not only completed his PhD, he’s written a book about his experiences so that others can learn from them.

Paul commented: "I have a very severe disability: I have to use a wheelchair all the time, I have very little use of my hands and some people find it difficult to understand what I am saying.

This book is about how I did my PhD, the highest qualification a person can study for.

I carried out the research for my PhD at a special school. We, the young people and I, formed advocacy sessions. In these sessions we talked about what the young people wanted to do when they left school. I told the young people about my own transition from special school to mainstream education. Many of the young people had similar disabilities to mine.

One of the main concerns about my work was the way I gathered the data for my research. It was impossible to have the usual one-to-one interview as I had my personal assistant interpreting what I was saying and young person would have their own interpreter. Therefore, we had to find other ways of doing this.

As I cannot use a pen and paper, observations proved difficult too. My personal assistant took notes for me while in the school and I wrote them up on my computer when I got home."
