DESCRIPTION:Our understanding of the Universe has changed dramatically si
nce Sir Bernard Lovell first\narrived at Jodrell Bank in December 1945.
The radio telescopes built here have allowed us to\nfind objects in the
Universe which we never knew existed. In the 1960s networks of\ntelescop
es helped discover the first quasars. In 1979 Jodrell Bank scientists di
scovered the\nfirst gravitational lens. Pulsars were also unknown 70 yea
rs ago and work done with the Lovell\nTelescope has contributed greatly
to our understanding of these enigmatic objects.\n\nThis lecture will ex
plore how our understanding of the universe has changed in the past 70\n
years and how work done at Jodrell Bank has contributed to this.\n\nPre
lecture dinner is available from the Planet Pavilion Cafe. Pre-booking n
 ecessary.
