DESCRIPTION:This event has been postponed. A new date will be announced s
oon. Existing bookings will be valid for the rescheduled event\, and mor
e tickets will be released when the final details are confirmed.\n\nAlan
Sinfield once distinctively theorised both the New Left generally and l
iberation movements individually as subcultures\, but regarded these pos
itively in the context of the defeats the Left had suffered during the 1
980s. \n\nThe recent emergence of culture wars directed against a ‘new e
lite’ appears to mark a resurgence of the social conservatism of that de
cade after\, and in response to\, what Professor David Alderson has call
ed a ‘diversified dominant’ under neoliberalism. \n\nPerhaps\, though\,
we need to break from the strategies of the past? The argument of Profes
sor Alderson’s inaugural lecture is that subcultures have had a mixed re
cord of success\, but that they are ultimately poor vehicles for a trans
formative politics. \n\nA more promising agenda would be one that emphas
ized the values of freedom and responsibility\, and the relations betwee
n them. \n\nThis lecture will focus on film\, poetry and fiction as thes
 e relate to the Left's fortunes.\n
