DESCRIPTION:How to break the isolation of the sculptural object?\n\nSculp
ture in the modern and post-modern periods has been characterized by its
homelessness. Although developments within site-specific art and instal
lation practices have to some extent reasserted the importance of place
and location for sculpture\, the production of a single\, isolated and n
omadic object remains a primary mode of expression for sculptors.\n\nA d
isplay of sculptures from the Whitworth collection curated by Charles He
wlings\, Clare O’Dowd and John Plowman will act as a catalyst for this i
nformal discussion event. Over the course of the day they will each lead
one of three panels of speakers of international renown to explore issu
es of production\, display and reception in relation to the homeless obj
ects of sculpture.\n\nThe aim of the day is to create a two-way exchange
of knowledge and ideas between speakers and participants that will cont
ribute to the development of the curatorial brief for a proposed exhibit
ion entitled ‘Homeless Sculpture’.\n\nSpeakers: Dr. Robert Burstow\, Ber
nice Donszelmann\, Dr. Catherine George\, Dr Julia Kelly\, Dr. Sam Lacke
y\, Professor David Lomas\, Professor Alex Potts\, Dr. Jo Melvin\, Brend
an Prendeville\, Dr. Joy Sleeman\n\nThis Whitworth Studies event is free
and open to everyone. Places are limited and booking is essential.\n\n\
