“Transnational Ambivalence: Belonging and Forgetting Among Children Of Migrants In Sabah, East Malaysia”
This paper is concerned with children of Filipino and Indonesian refugees and migrants who have grown up in the East Malaysian city of Kota Kinabalu.
I describe the forms of transnational connection and disconnection that migration to Sabah has entailed, and explore children’s varied experiences of transnational kinship and identity.
In particular, I draw out the power of transnational ambivalence, in a context where many families have long-term involvements with Sabah as a home, and yet are frequently perceived as foreign ‘illegals’.
For children of migrants, coming of age in a city where they are perceived as ‘out of place’ involves multiple forms of belonging and forgetting.
