DESCRIPTION:Dr. Afshin Zilanawala\, University College London\n\nTitle: P
arental nonstandard shifts in the United Kingdom\n\nAbstract:\nEvening\,
night\, and weekend work (hereafter referred to as nonstandard\nwork) a
re common in the 24/7 economy\, but does this create new opportunities o
r new pressures for combining work with family life? In the UK\, nearly
25% of employed mothers and 35% of employed fathers have nonstandard sch
edules. A growing body of research has pointed to the adverse impact of
these schedules on child and parental health. However\, the majority of
this research has focused on the US context. Given that work-related str
ess\, depression and anxiety accounted for 11.7 million working days los
t in the UK in 2015-16\, we need to gather more evidence on the implicat
ions of parents’ nonstandard work schedules on parents’ health\, family
life\, and children’s health. In this presentation\, I will present desc
riptive results on the prevalence of nonstandard shifts among mothers an
d fathers in the Millennium Cohort Study (MCS). Second\, I will investig
ate the relationship between parental shift work and children’s BMI\, an
d maternal shift work and breastfeeding behaviors. Third\, I will discus
s future research questions related to nonstandard shifts in the MCS.\n\
n\nTea/coffee and cakes from 2.45.\n\nAll welcome. No registration nece
ssary.\n\nThe Cathie Marsh Institute (CMI) provides a focal point at The
University of Manchester for the application of quantitative methods in
interdisciplinary social science research in order to generate a world
 class research environment.\n\n
