 days associate Roman comedy with the plays of the celebrated playwrights
  Plautus and Terence\, who influenced generations of dramatic and non-dr
 amatic Roman authors\, the educational curriculum of the empire and late
  antiquity\, and European theatre. But this presentation will focus on t
 ypes of Latin comedies that were a big hit on the Roman stage in the fir
 st century BC and beyond: they seem to have been vulgar in subject-matte
 r\, uncouth in vocabulary\, and hugely controversial for various reasons
