DESCRIPTION:Value Creation in Online Communities for Educators\nBooth\, S
haron E\; Kellogg\, Shaun B. British Journal of Educational Technology V
 ol. 46\, Iss. 4\, (Jul 2015): 684-698\n\nAs a Journal club this is a ch
ance to meet colleagues and share thoughts on this article.\n\nhttps://o
 nlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1111/bjet.12168\n\nAbstract from pape
r:\nThe popularity and pervasiveness of online communities have led rese
archers and practitioners alike to closely examine the utility of online
communities for supporting and facilitating professional learning. As e
conomic constraints leave fewer resources available for professional dev
elopment\, educators in particular are examining the potential of online
communities to enhance and extend traditional professional development
opportunities. Leveraging the potential of online communities requires a
n in-depth understanding of the value that members find through their pa
rticipation. This study used Wenger\, Trayner and de Laat’s value creati
on framework to better understand cycles of value creation in online com
munities. Findings illuminate how members with varying perspectives and
levels of expertise co-construct new forms of meaning and understanding
in ways that are individually and collectively valuable\, and how they a
pply that knowledge to their professional practice. Additionally\, the s
tudy offers insight into the ways in which actions of community leaders
and a sponsoring organization support and facilitate value creation thro
ugh different types of activities\, tools and interactions.\n\nThe Acade
my for Education and Professional Development’s mission is “To ensure co
nsistent high-quality development and delivery of educational programmes
with student experience at their heart”. Academy events are open to all
those who contribute to the development\, delivery and management of FB
MH undergraduate\, postgraduate and continuing professional development
programmes including staff from across the University\, the Manchester A
cademic Health Science Centre and our NHS clinical education partners. T
he Pedagogy Seminar Series provides a forum to discuss research undertak
en and/or pedagogy literature of interest.\n\nRefreshments will be provi
