ce\n\nAbstract:\n\nAs originality is the engine of scientific advancemen
t\, the origin of originality is of interest in the studies of science.
In particular\, we investigate how scientists learn to produce original
knowledge\, focusing on their early career experiences (PhD and postdoc)
. We investigated scientists' early-career experiences and followed thei
 r careers for 10-20 years\, finding a few results. First\, "original" sc
ientists tend to be raised by "original" supervisors. Second\, this is m
ediated by the transfer of research skills and strategies conducive to o
riginality. Third\, the transfer of originality is facilitated by traini
ng environment where young scientists are allowed autonomy and room for
exploration. Fourth\, such training environment often results in ineffic
iency and failure\, which nonetheless seem to be a source of learning fo
r originality.\n\nSotaro Shibayama is Senior Lecturer at School of Econo
mics and Management\, Lund University. He earned degrees in Life Science
s and in Management\, and has engaged in consulting business in the area
of R&D management. His research interest thus centers around the operat
ion of science\, management of R&D organizations\, and science & technol
ogy policy. His papers have been published in Research Policy\, American
Sociological Review\, etc. Find more at http://sotaroshibayama.weebly.c
