DESCRIPTION:This is a CIDRAL Special Public Event\, jointly organised by 
 CIDRAL\, Sociology\, and CRESC at the University of Manchester\, Walloni
 e-Bruxelles International and Institut français du Royaume-Uni\n\nBenoît
  Peeters's widely acclaimed study\, Derrida: A Biography was first publi
 shed in English in 2012 by Polity Press. In writing this biography\, Pee
 ters was granted first access to Derrida's extensive personal archives a
 nd interviewed more than a hundred of his friends and colleagues. The re
 sult is a compelling account of one of the later twentieth century's for
 emost thinkers set in the context of the turbulent and disputatious inte
 llectual politics of the time.\n\nIn a session chaired by Dr Andrew Mile
 s (Sociology\, University of Manchester)\, Peeters will be talking about
  Derrida's life and how he went about writing the biography. He will the
 n be in conversation with CIDRAL Director Francesca Billiani before taki
 ng part in a question and answer session with the audience. The event wi
 ll be followed by a reception and book signing at Blackwell's Bookshop i
 n The Precinct Centre.\n\nBenoît Peeters was born in Paris in 1956. Foll
 owing a degree in Philosophy at the Sorbonne (Paris I)\, he went on to s
 tudy for his Masters at the École Pratique des Hautes Études under the d
 irection of Roland Barthes. He has since published over forty works on a
  wide variety of subjects and has written essays and biographies on Herg
 é\, Alfred Hitchcock\, and Paul Valéry.
