How do children relate to their changing environment? Drawing on ethnographic research in East Anglian primary schools, this paper looks beyond the presumption that children are disconnected from their environment, inherent in theories such as “nature deficit disorder”, instead focussing on the dynamics of change as perceived by children and the ways in which they seek to rearticulate the places most important to them. Through play, storytelling, and creative engagement with their surroundings, children find ways to re-appropriate an environment from which they find themselves excluded.
