DESCRIPTION:An afternoon symposium on the history of African diaspora pol
 itics jointly organised by the History Division\, the Political Cultures
  Research Group\, and the Race\, Roots & Resistance Collective. Professo
 r Hakim Adi (University of Chichester) will deliver a public keynote ent
 itled ‘Pan-Africanism or Black Internationalism? A History’. The keynote
  will be followed by a panel showcasing the related scholarship of Unive
 rsity of Manchester staff and students.\n\nSpeaker Bio: Hakim Adi is a P
 rofessor of the History of Africa and the African Diaspora at the Univer
 sity of Chichester. He is a leading scholar of the African diaspora expe
 rience in Britain with a particular emphasis on Black radical and pan-Af
 rican politics. Adi has authored several books on these themes\, includi
 ng West Africans in Britain 1900-60: Nationalism\, Pan-Africanism\, and 
 Communism (Lawrence and Wishart\, 1998)\; The 1945 Manchester Pan-Africa
 n Congress Revisited (New Beacon\, 1995)\; Pan-African History: Politica
 l Figures from Africa and the Diaspora since 1787 (Routledge\, 2003)\; a
 nd Pan-Africanism and Communism: The Communist International\, Africa an
 d the Diaspora\, 1919-1939 (Africa World Press\, 2013).\n\nIn addition t
 o his groundbreaking research\, Adi has also played a vital role in spot
 lighting and addressing racial inequalities within the history professio
 n. In 2014\, Adi founded History Matters\, a group of Black historians\,
  educators\, and third sector organisations concerned with the underrepr
 esentation of students and teachers of African and Caribbean heritage wi
 thin the discipline of History. He also works with the Young Historians 
 Project\, an initiative designed to promote the development of young his
 torians of African and Caribbean heritage in Britain.
