The demands for water, energy, and food resources in the East Africa Region are rapidly rising, stemming from growing populations, economic development, and changes in lifestyles. Climate change increases the uncertainty of managing large water-energy-food systems like river basins to sustainably support essential services like water, energy, and food. Large infrastructure projects that provide these services (e.g., dams) are often significant long-term investments. They can affect millions of people and the environment at different stages of project implementation, including finance procurement and repayment, construction, and operation. The effects of large infrastructure projects could be direct or secondary through economic linkages. Devising infrastructure expansion and operation plans is challenged by economic and biophysical complexities and future uncertainties.

In this webinar, Julien Harou will chair a panel discussion with leading experts in water resources management and development economics, including Claudia Ringler, Alvaro Calzadilla, Abdulkarim Seid, and Ken Strzepek looking back at FutureDAMs economic analysis work on infrastructure development in Africa. The webinar will start with an overview presentation by Mohammed Basheer, a Ph.D. researcher at the University of Manchester, followed by a panel discussion. The discussion will explore the current approaches to economic assessment of infrastructure development in Africa and identify areas for future research to improve uptake of economic analysis in policymaking.
