 seminar. Abstract below. \n\nThe origin of mammals is one of the most ic
 onic evolutionary events in the vertebrate fossil record\, marking the t
 ransition from an ancestral sprawling bodyplan to a more erect posture c
 apable of sustained and vigorous running. Though evolutionary shifts in 
 limb anatomy have attracted considerable attention\, the role of the axi
 al skeleton in this major locomotory transition is poorly understood. My
  work is combining 3D imaging\, novel statistical approaches\, biomechan
 ics\, and digital modelling of exceptionally-preserved transitional foss
 ils to tackle the evolution of the mammalian backbone.
