  describes the thoughts and process of depicting the story of a young la
 d\, Pedro\, condemned to die in the early 1700s in the Viceroyalty of Pe
 ru\, who gives his soul to the devil in order to escape from jail. The d
 evil then helps him survive on the margins of society with the power of 
 a magic ring\, but his evil presence is so overpowering that Pedro reneg
 es on his pact with his only ‘friend’\, loses the ring\, and is captured
  and condemned to death again. He then recounts his story to the inquisi
 tion in order to obtain absolution before his execution. As well as glos
 sing the story\, the talk will discuss the challenges of interpreting hi
 storically the trial manuscript as well as visualising and drawing it in
  a way that seems faithful not just to the historical document\, but to 
 Pedro himself. How close can we get to Pedro’s own understanding of what
  happened to him? To what extent can we fill in the details? What do we 
 gain and what do we lose by doing so?
