Becoming Papa : Kinship, Senescence and the Ambivalent Inward Journeys of Ageing Men in the Antilles (Emrys Peters Essay Prize Winner 2014)
This paper traces intergenerational parenting experience through the biographies of men in Dominica (Lesser Antilles) from being fathered to becoming fathers, to becoming grandfathers (papa). Through narratives and everyday observations I seek to understand how Caribbean men’s kinship lives change as they move into later-life. It is revealed that these inward journeys – from a peer-oriented outside world, towards home and kin – are marked with gendered ambivalence. Whilst ageing men pursue paternal redemption, endeavour to disrupt cycles of absence and develop a special love for grandchildren; they also recite wistful tales of virile pasts (of spear- fishing, sexual conquest and crime), fondly recalling former lives in the outside world of men.
