DESCRIPTION:In the midst of the gothic splendour of the John Rylands Libr
 ary’s\, Dr Linnie Blake and Dr Xavier Aldana Reyes\, who co-curated the 
 Darkness and Light Exhibition will introduce the historic works containe
 d in the Eighteenth Century and Victorian Gothic literature cases. \n\nT
 hey will outline the literary and cultural significance of the texts dis
 played and the reasons why they chose them. \n\nThe event will explore t
 he ways in which gothic writing opens a window on the darker side of the
 se historic periods to illuminate the issues\, tensions and anxieties of
  the age. \n\nMany of the books we will look at are first editions. They
  include classic works Horace Walpole\, Ann Radcliffe\,  Mary Shelly\, E
 dgar Allan Poe\, Bram Stoker and Robert Louis Stevenson. \n\nWe will be
