Centre for Criminology and Criminal Justice Seminar. Hitherto, inquiries about the causes and effects of interpersonal violence have dominated the field. In this seminar, I will take a different approach at its starting point, namely that interpersonal violence is a social action embedded in responses from various actors. Responses cover a wide terrain of practices, such as confrontational or passive direct action, or spoken or written telling. The data I will present traces its origin from an interview study of women abused by their husbands or common-law spouses and their social networks responses, such as children experiencing the violence or relatives and friends hearing about it. In my presentation, a social network encompassing 38 persons is explored. Eight of them were interviewed and gave their accounts of the action and interaction that took place in response to the violence. It will be argued that accounts of responses from social network members can offer a lens for understanding the complex structural and meaning making processes involved in intimate partner violence.
