  Epistemic politics and doctoral education in Africa\n\nIn this paper I 
 address the epistemic consequences of framing doctoral training as a pro
 ductivity challenge. Amidst claims that Africa ‘needs’ another million P
 hDs\, contemporary doctoral funding initiatives sustain colonial academi
 c networks and mobility regimes. Asymmetric transnational collaborations
  channel funding and resources to a small research elite. The policy dis
 course of research ‘capacity building’ effaces the precarity of academic
  work and doctoral study in many universities\, and contrasts with loud 
 calls to decolonize and ‘transform’ African higher education. I use ethn
 ographic portraiture to explore the implications of these epistemic bifu
 rcations\, and the value(s) of an anthropology of Higher Education.\n\nS
