After briefly reviewing the role of the National Physical Laboratory and his own work in developing better metrology for tribology (wear and friction), Mark will introduce the topic of measurement units
and their importance for our modern civilisation. Following a historical review, he will outline how the SI system of units will be changed on the 20th May to complete the move away from units of
measurements based on physical artefacts to units of measurements based on the fundamental physical constants. This change is based on ground-breaking new science with the recent focus on the
realisation of the kilogram for the measurement of mass and the Kelvin for the measurement of temperature.
