DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dr Dermot O’Reilly\, Queen’s University Belfast\n\nP
oor mental health has been identified as a major and increasing public h
ealth issue with significant economic and social impact. However\, ident
ifying and assessing the burden of poor mental health in the population
is fraught with a range of definitional and methodological difficulties
and researchers have been increasingly exploiting routine administrative
data to provide further understanding of the distributions\, antecedent
s and outcomes of those with poor mental health. This presentation will
use examples from recent studies of mental health to illustrate some of
the benefits\, caveats and the frustrations associated with trying to tu
rn administrative data to a research purpose.\n\nDermot is a Clinical Se
nior Lecturer in the School of Medicine\, Dentistry and Biomedical Scien
ces and his core research interests focus on social factors that influen
ce the health of people and the effective use of routine datasets to fur
ther understanding of the distribution and social causes of disease and
 its impact in society.
