DESCRIPTION:During the worst political crisis in Hong Kong’s history\, an
 ti-government protesters have staged massive sit-ins at the city’s airpo
 rt. This talk examines the tactics and promotional materials used by the
  protesters to make their case\, and compares them with those of the col
 onial authorities during an earlier crisis – the 1967 disturbances and r
 iots – to present Hong Kong as a safe tourist destination and counter ad
 verse overseas news coverage.  \n\nJohn M. Carroll is Professor of Histo
 ry and Associate Dean (Global) in the Faculty of Arts at the University 
 of Hong Kong. He is the author of Edge of Empires: Chinese Elites and Br
 itish Colonials in Hong Kong\, A Concise History of Hong Kong\, and the 
 forthcoming Canton Days: British Life and Death in China. This talk draw
