Tim Ingold (Professor of Social Anthropology, University of Aberdeen), will deliver a public lecture entitled 'The Creativity of Habit'.
Do we make habits, or do habits make us? I argue that habit is neither producer nor product but a principle of production whereby a being that dwells in its own practices is recursively generated by them. Such a being is free, not in the illusory sense of a subjective free will that stands opposed to the objective necessity of predetermination, but in a real sense, founded in attention to others and responsive to the ways they are going. The freedom of habit, necessarily caught in the mesh of attention and response, is a condition for truly creative life.
