The Vice Dean for Research and Innovation, Andy Trafford, invites you to celebrate the achievements in research and innovation in the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health.
The keynote speaker will be Professor Sir Rory Collins, Head of the Nuffield Department of Population Health at the University of Oxford, speaking on “ UK Biobank: scale, depth, duration … but, most importantly, accessibility”. Sir Rory is well known for his work in the establishment of large-scale epidemiological studies of the causes, prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease and for his role as UK Biobank Principal Investigator and Chief Executive.
The day will include a series of short talks from researchers and professional service colleagues from across the Faculty. Contributions will include:
• Leading Fellows on how they secured funding successes:
o Prof Mike Brockhurst, ERC Advanced Award
o Dr Joan Chang, MRC Award for her role in establishing Postdoc Appreciation Week
o Dr Marilena Hadjidemetriou, recently awarded an ERC Starting Grant
o Dr Darya Frank, recently awarded a Royal Society University Research Fellowship
• UK Biobank roundtable discussion: Prof Sir Rory Collins, Prof Martin Rutter and Dr Lauren Carson (Head of Research Development, UK Biobank)
• International collaboration, with a focus on Cancer partnership with Kenya: Jennifer Davies-Oliviera, Emma Crosbie & Keith Brennan
• Building industrial partnerships: BBSRC/Industry partnership project: Prof Mike Sherratt and Prof Cath O’Neill; and, Building a Spin out – Complement Therapeutics (CTx): Prof Richard Unwin
• Translating from the lab to the clinic: The PALOH Study and next steps in personalised medicine: Prof Bill Newman & Dr John McDermott
• Research career development: Teamwork and Collaboration: Principles for Successful Research: Ruth Norris & Charlotte Stockton-Powdrell; Engaged and Inclusive Research: Julia Schoonover
• Why it’s important to engage with journalists: Allan Pacey & Mike Addelman
• Celebrating our Researcher and PGRs of the Year
