 cture 2020\, will be delivered by Sir Timothy John \nBesley (Tim) CBE FB
 A\, School Professor of Economics and Political Science \nand Sir W. Art
 hur Lewis Professor of Development Economics at the London \nSchool of E
 conomics\n\nIt is now widely appreciated that an effective state is need
 ed to support \ngrowth and development. This includes institutions which
  support policy \nmaking and strong cultural norms. This lecture\, entit
 led “State Fragility\, \nGrowth and Development”\, will discuss how rece
 nt developments in \npolitical economy are useful for addressing the pra
 ctical challenges faced \nby governments and international agencies in t
 he face of weak legitimacy\, a \npoorly developed private economy\, low 
 levels of state capacity and/or \nfractured societies. It will discuss t
 he prospects for fresh approaches to \npolicy-making.\n\nTim Besley's re
 search spans public economics\, development economics \nand political ec
 onomy. He is a past President of the Econometric Society \nand the Inter
 national Economic Association. He is also a Fellow of the \nBritish Acad
 emy and a foreign honorary member of the American Academy \nof Arts and 
 Sciences. Beyond his academic work\, he has been a member of \nthe Bank 
 of England Monetary Policy Committee and is a current member of \nthe Na
 tional Infrastructure Commission as well as giving advice to a \nnumber 
 of international organizations. In 2018\, he was knighted for \nservices
  to economics and public policy.\n\nFollowing the lecture\, there will b
 e a short drinks reception in University \nPlace\n\n\n\n
