 his paper examines the reasons for the widespread popular uptake of rela
 xation practices in postwar Britain as a means of treating and preventin
 g ill-health and enhancing wellbeing. It surveys the multiplicity of act
 ors involved in relaxation training\, and the associated pedagogic and m
 aterial culture developed for promoting\, learning and teaching relaxati
 on. Through analysing the cultural\, biomedical and educational underpin
 nings of relaxation teaching\, the paper aims to shed new light on conte
 sted notions of health-management and expertise in the postwar decades.
