Humour and the History of Science
Dr Rebekah Higgitt, University of Kent
Historians of science have?often made use of humorous sources,?such as plays,?songs, poems and caricatures, in their work. With honourable exceptions, they have, perhaps, tended to use them?to add?colour and interest to their accounts, or to provide entertaining public engagement opportunities,?rather?than to?theorise?or generalise about: humour in relation to science;?how we can best use humorous texts and images?as?historical sources;?and?what functions humour?has served in relation to?science. This paper seeks?explore?the possibilities in this field, drawing on?recent?work?in?science communication as well as literary studies and the history of science, and to offer some examples and broad categorisations. It also seeks to kill all the jokes by explaining them.
