  to explore the driving forces\, influences and sources of inspiration w
 ithin contemporary art.\nThe series is a collaboration between the Whitw
 orth and Manchester Metropolitan University and is programmed by Pavel B

 \n\nEmma Hart\, the winner of the 2016 Max Mara Prize for Women\, has re
 cently received much attention and critical praise for her large-scale i
 nstallation Mama Mia!\, shown at the Whitechapel Gallery\, London\, in 2
 017 and earlier this year at the Fruitmarket in Edinburgh\, and for her 
 collaboration with Jonathan Baldock\, Love Life\, touring concurrently i
 n England. Combining handcrafted ceramics with audio visual media and of
 ten employing visual and verbal puns Hart reflects in her work on the ps
 ychology of family relations\, frictions and behavioural patterns\, or o
 n the conflicts associated with love\, domesticity and parenthood. Altho
 ugh she studied photography and initially learned her skills in shaping 
 clay from YouTube\, she has found in the tactile medium a vehicle that a
 llows her "to talk about mess or chaos: all the stuff photography protec
 ts us from\," and to do so with an equal dose of emotional honesty\, sha
 rp observation and contagious humour.
